Mentoring: What is it?

Mentoring: a relationship through which one person empowers another by sharing God-given resources.

Classes and small groups are WONDERFUL.

But sometimes it is helpful...or even necessary...to also have a significant one-on-one relationship with someone who is further along in their spiritual maturity than you are. The meetings with your mentor may be weekly, bi-weekly, or just once a month. Some meetings may be structured time of Bible Study and prayer, and other times may just be enjoying an activity together.

A Mentor IS NOT:

Perfect

Trying to make you into a clone of him/herself

A mystic guru with ALL the answers

A Mentor IS:

Caring

Spiritually Mature (and still maturing)

Interested in helping others become more like Christ

Available

Interested in helping you look for answers in Scripture

Involved in personal Bible study

Active in the life of GCC

Someone who learns from their mistakes

A unique Christian who shares their experiences and their own spiritual walk.

Meetings with a Mentor

When you get together with your mentor, you will likely share a Bible study, prayer and talk about your lives. There may also be times when you get together just for fun - or when your families both spend time together. Mentoring can happen while fishing, driving somewhere, working together on a project, etc. The beauty of a mentoring relationship is that you are building a relationship with another Christian who is helping you learn how to navigate through the pitfalls of life. You and your mentor will figure out exactly what your meetings will look like.

Mentor: the person doing the mentoring/empowering

Mentoree: the person being mentored/empowered

ARE YOU READY FOR A MENTOR?

Maybe you are at the point where you would really like to have a mentor. You would enjoy having someone with whom to talk about your life on a deeper level than you would in a small group. You would enjoy someone who can speak into your life with words of encouragement and guidance and accountability. You are ready to share openly and to accept guidance from someone else. You are ready to commit to spend time with a mentor on a regular basis. Does this sound like you?

ARE YOU READY TO BE A MENTOR?

Or maybe you are at the point where you are able to mentor another person. You're not perfect. You mess up a lot. You don't know everything. But you do have a lot to offer by way of life experience and knowledge that could really benefit someone who is younger or not as far along in their spiritual walk. Your encouragement, prayer and friendship could be what they need right now. You will pray for the other person on a regular basis. You are ready to commit to spending time on a mentoring relationship. Does this sound like you?
